Speed Circuit 2023 Season 13 House Rules

SPEED CIRCUIT 2023 Season 13 House Rules (28 Dec 2022)

Use normal speed circuit rules with the following variations.

Teams

If six or less players attend a race, then each player should field 2 cars. If 7 or more players are present, then the players must agree whether 2 cars are allowed. A player may always choose to only field 1 car.

Skill Points.

Each team is assigned 2 skill points per lap.  For example at the beginning or a 3 lap race a team would be assigned 6 skill points.  Players use skill points instead of rolling a die in most cases.  Players decide before rolling dice whether or not to use a skill point. Points do not need to be pre-assigned to a specific team member.

Car Construction.

When a player controls more than one driver he must assign 5 build points to one driver 4 to the other.

Dice Rolls.

Instead of rolling1d6 on tables roll 2d6. Higher rolls are always better. All tables have been adjusted to reflect the changes.

Advantage or Disadvantage.

When rolling with Advantage or Disadvantage roll 3d6 instead of 2. For Advantage add the highest 2 dice. For Disadvantage add the lowest 2 dice. In both cases ignore the 3rd die.

Down Force Settings (for winged cars).

Before assigning build points the player must choose the downforce of each car and use the corresponding row on the Performance Chart.  The player must choose one of the following settings for each of their cars independently:

Down Force

Advantage

Disadvantage

Grid Order.

There are 4 grid groups.  Cars in a lower numbered grid group will be placed on the starting ahead of cars in a higher numbered grid.

Step 1: Place all cars in a grid group based on their starting speed:

Start Speed

Grid Group

80mph

2

60mph

3

40mph

4

Step 2: Starting with cars in group 4, players may spend 1 wear point to move a car into the next lower numbered grid group. A car may only move down one grid from its starting group.

Step 3: Starting with the lowest numbered grid group containing cars, place cars on grid starting positions. If there is more than one car in a group, then the players roll 2d6 for each car. A player may spend a skill point to roll with Advantage. The car with the highest roll result is placed on the grid first.  Tied cars will continue to roll off until the tie is broken. Spent wear and skill point are not available for the race.

Late Breaking.

To avoid a collision or slow down for a corner, a player may choose to reduce his written speed before moving.  The speed reduction takes place in the space before the collision would occur or before a corner is entered.  Consult the Deceleration Chart and add 20 to the total amount the car is over its Max Deceleration.   If the player chooses not to slow down to avoid a collision, then use the normal collision rules.

Pass Through.

When all lanes are blocked on a straightaway, instead of a collision a player may attempt to pass through one of the squares containing another vehicle.  If not blocked, then the passing player may spend 1 wear or roll on the Pass Through Table.  The player may spend a skill to roll with advantage.

The player being passed through may allow or attempt to block the pass through.  If the player attempts to block, then the passing player may call off the passing attempt or continue.  If the passer continues, then both players must roll on the Pass Through Table with Disadvantage (roll 3d6 add lowest 2). You may spend one skill point to nullify the Disadvantage.

Corner Acceleration.

Players may accelerate a car starting on the last space of a corner (the last space with a speed limit).  Cars starting in a corner, but not in the last space of a corner, may not accelerate. Cars that spin in a corner may accelerate using start speed on their next turn, even if they are not on the last space of the corner.  Cars starting in the last space of a corner are not impacted by the space’s speed limit.

Long Tracks

If 1 lap of a track is equal to or exceeds the length of an average 3-lap race and one lap is planned, then calculate Wear and Skill points as if the race was 3-laps. This rule applies to tracks like Steve’s realistically long Nurbergring.

Scoring

During a race, the first car to complete the 1st lap receives a bonus point. The first car to complete the 2nd lap also scores a bonus point. All cars that complete a race score points. Cars that do not finish the race do not score points (unless they earned bonus points for leading laps 1 or 2). If 12 or fewer cars start a race use the following formula to determine finishing points: 1st = Number of Cars +3; 2nd = Number of Cars +1; 3rd the Number of Cars -2; 4th = Number of Cars -3; 5th = the number of cars -4; etc. Continue this pattern. If more than 12 cars start a race, then use 12 for the Number of Cars in the above formula.  Cars finishing beyond 12th place receive 1 point.

Race Report: Speed Circuit 2022 Watkins Glen by Steve

Thrilling finish to the spectacular 2022 season.

Twelve cars, including season champion Ronnie Peterson, occupied the grid at the US Grand Prix.

Hulme in the the white McLaren jumped of the front row and took an early lead. Stewart, who started on pole, battled Hulme ahead of the pack throughout the first lap with Peterson on their heals. The Blue #1 Tyrrell completed the first lap ahead of the McLaren.

Stewart leads start of second lap at Watkins Glen 2022.

During lap 2, Stewart and Hulme continued an epic battle not only for the race but also for second place in the championship. The Tyrrell and the McLaren set a blazing pace. Meanwhile Galli in the red Martini Techo began to move up. The McLaren faltered and Hulme was passed by Peterson and Galli on the last corner of Lap 2.

Stewart clears the line ahead of the pack at the start of lap 3 of the US Grand Prix.

Galli made a run at the leader while Peterson and Hulme battled for third. Then Peterson blasted past Galli. Stewart’s Tyrrell slowed and they began to close the gap with the leader. Galli slipped into the inside of Stewart going into the last Hard Right to take the lead.  Galli, Stewart, and Hulme were 3 wide across the finish line with Galli taking the win!

Three wide across the finish line at Watkins Glen 2022.

Race Report: Speed Circuit Monza By Steve 2022

Rookie Team Makes it Big at Monza!

Eight teams filled out the grid for the Italian Grand Prix. Dave led Guthrie racing to its first pole position. Guthrie’s Beuttler shared the front row with this season’s champion, Peterson in the STP March. Brabham’s Reutermann and McLaren’s Hulme secured the second row.

During the initial lap, Beuttler and Peterson raced side by side ahead of the pack. By the time group approached the Curve de Lesmos, Stewart had picked up several positions as he cut a path toward the leaders.

As they exited the Lesmos, Beuttler maintained his lead while Hulme and Stewart threatened Peterson’s position. But Peterson exploited the superior speed of his weak down force setup to outrun the others and secure the lead just before entering the Parabolica. The Brabham’s engine began to make a terrible noise, lose power, and Reutemann began to fall back.

Peterson, Beuttler, and Stewart were three wide through the Parabolica. Peterson exited the Parabolica in the lead followed by Stewart, Hulme, Beuttler, and Fittipaldi in a four wide formation! Peterson charged down the straight to secure the bonus point. Stewart slipped streamed Peterson and they were side-by-side to start the second lap. Reutemann continued to nurse his sick car.

Peterson began to struggle with the weak down-force setup. Stewart outmaneuvered Peterson through the Curva Grande and took the lead. Then Beuttler and Galli passed Peterson in the Lesmos.

Stewart and Beuttler battled for the lead through Valone and into the Parabolica. Peterson tried to regain momentum and passed Galli. Then Peterson flew out of the Parabolica, but this time Stewart crossed the line first to gain the bonus point. The Brabham may have lost a gear or two, but Reutermann was able hold it together for another lap.

Peterson took the lead going into the Curve Grande, but had lost the inside position going into the Parabolica. Beuttler and Galli were in hot pursuit of Stewart and Peterson. Stewart took the lead once again exiting the Lesmos. Beuttler and Galli passed Peterson as the March became more and more unstable in the corners. Stewart seemed in position to win.

A puff of smoke emanated from the rear of Stewart’s Tyrell as he exited the Valone and he slowed. Beuttler and Galli passed Stewart while Peterson vied for his position. Stewart out broke Galli and Peterson to regain some lost ground. The 4 leading drivers charged into the Parabolica. Peterson spun-out. Beuttler emerged in the lead followed by Galli and Stewart. Then the Tyrell’s engine exploded into a ball-of-fire and black smoke forcing Stewart to glide the car to a stop. Beuttler crossed the finish line first to win the race followed closely by Galli. Fittipaldi and Hulme had been battling and swapping positions throughout the race. Fittipaldi won the battle and finished in fourth place just ahead of Hulme.

Congratulations Dave!

Race Report: Speed Circuit Nurburgring Full 2022

Legendary Manager Makes a Come Back!

Nine teams faced off at the “Green Hell”, the giant German Grand Prix Nurbergring course. The field included veterans, one rookie manager (Dave-Team Guthrie), and the surprise appearance of Adam managing Team Surtees.

Stewart placed Elf Tyrell in the pole position for the first time this season. John Player Lotus’ Fittipaldi shared the front row with Stewart. Reutemann and Peterson, the season championship points leader, occupied the second row.

Stewart blasted off the line and was initially challenged by Fittapaldi, but Peterson charged by Fittapaldi. Hulme in the McLaren and Galli in the Martini began working their way through the pack.

Peterson pushed his red #8 March past Stewart and was first past the checkpoint 1, but then his engine began to smoke and he slowly rolled off the course. Surtees pressured Reutemann who struggled in the Brabham.

Galli made a brilliant move in the Karnssell to slip by Fittapaldi and then was first across the second checkpoint just ahead of Stewart. Unable to keep pace with Galli’s faster Martini, Stewart conceded the position. Steve’s Martini team lead a race for the first time this season.

Hulme and Reutemann passed Fittapaldi. Then Hulme pressed Stewart. Fittapaldi tried, but failed to recapture his position from Reutemann. Galli crossed the finish line just ahead of Stewart and Hulme securing Martini’s first victory! Reutemann finished ahead of Fittipaldi while Surtees, Beuttler, and Ganely flew down the front straight side-by-side.

Congratulations Steve! Great track and fantastic race.

Speed Circuit Season 12 House Rules Update

SPEED CIRCUIT 2022 Season 12 House Rules (17 Jul 2022)

Use normal speed circuit rules with the following variations.

Teams.

Players use skill points instead of rolling a die.  Players decide before rolling dice whether or not to use a skill point. Points do not need to be pre-assigned to a specific team member.

Car Construction.

When a player controls more than one driver he must assign 5 build points to one driver 4 to the other.

Down Force Settings (for winged cars).

Before assigning build points the player must choose the down force of each car and use the corresponding row on the Performance Chart.  The player must choose one of the following settings for each of their cars independently:

Down Force

Build Adjustment

Bonus/Penalty

Normal

None.

None.

Strong

– Acceleration & Top Speed Cost More

1 less wear used in corners and braking

Weak

– Acceleration & Top Speed Cost Less

1 more wear used in corners and braking

Note 1: Strong down force cars must have at least one wear point remaining in order to use the strong bonus in corners. For example, if a strong down force car with no remaining wear exceeds a corner’s speed by 20mph, then a chance table roll is required.

Note 2: If wear is not called for in the corning chart then a weak down force car does not need to pay 1 extra wear. For example, if a weak down force car exceeds a corner’s speed by 20mph then the player could either pay 2 wear (1 + 1) or roll on the chance table.

Grid Order.

There are 4 grid groups.  Cars in a lower numbered grid group will be placed on the starting ahead of cars in a higher numbered grid.

Step 1: Place all cars in a grid group based on their starting speed:

Start Speed

Step 2: Starting with cars in group 4, players may spend 1 wear point to move a car into the next lower numbered grid group. A car may only move down one grid from its starting group.

Step 3: Starting with the lowest numbered grid group containing cars, place cars on grid starting positions. If there is more than one car in a group, then the players roll a die for each car. The car with the lowest adjusted roll result is placed on the grid first.  Tied cars will continue to roll off until the tie is broken.

The passing player may spend 1 wear or roll on the Pass Through Table.

The player being passed through may allow or attempt to block the pass through.  If the player attempts to block, then the passing player may call off the passing attempt or continue.  If the passer continues, then both players must roll on the Pass Through Table and add 1 to their die roll.

Race Report – Speed Circuit Brands Hatch 2022

STP March Rules the British Grand Prix!

Brabham driver Reutemann held the 7-car grid pole position at the start of this years British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch. Season leader Peterson shared the front row with Reutemann. McLaren and Elf Tyrell followed in the second row.

Peterson seized the lead and Hulme blasted past Reutemann. Stewart held the inside position going into the Druid’s Hairpin, but lost the racing line to Reutemann.

Peterson got a jump through Graham Hill Bend and began to build an impressive lead. Ganely in the Marlboro BRM slipped past Galli in the Martini. Ickx pressed Stewart.

Peterson continued to build his lead obtaining a 5 space gap through the Clark Curve. Stewart’s Elf began trailing smoke and he began to slip back.Reutemann passed Hulme to move into second. The Ferrari threaten the McLaren at the Clearways and down the front stretch. Peterson finish the first lap far ahead of the pack.

Stewart was not able to finish the first lap and Elf slowly rolled into the pits; his race was over. Hulme charged his McLaren, passed the Brabham and began to close the gap with the STP March. Galli got by Ganely and looked like he was in a good position going into the Surtees Bend.

Peterson extended his lead and going into the Hawthorn Bend he once again had a 5 space gap between him and the rest of the field. For the rest of the second lap, Hulme then put on a tremendous show and closed the gap by the time they entered the Clearways. The Ferrari’s engine failed and Ickx joined Stewart in the pits.

Peterson and Hulme were neck and neck going down the front straight. Peterson won the sprint and finished the second lap ahead of Hulme. Reutemann maintained third place.

Hulme tried to stay with Peterson, but his second lap efforts had spent the McLaren. Low on wear Hulme fell back and found himself in a battle for second place with Reutemann. Peterson did not slow and had created a 7 space gap by the time he reached Pilgrim’s drop and he was unstoppable.

Peterson managed to maintain an incredible lead and finished the race in first place. Reutemann won the battle for second and finished ahead of Hulme who was followed by Galli.

Race Report – Speed Circuit Rheims 2022

March Dominates French Grand Prix!

Another full house of eight players resulted in each team fielding a single car. As predicted, the race was fast and furious.

Hulme started on pole for McLaren and he shared the front row with March’s Peterson, the season points leader. The only two drivers who had won races this season controlled on the front row. But Brabham driver Reutemann who had started in the back during the last few raced and finished near the front started in the 3rd position and promised to be a contender. Fittapaldi started in the second row and was hoping to make a comback and was in a good position to do so. Meanwhile Stewart, last year’s champion started dead last in his less than stellar performing Elf.

During the first lap, Peterson set a blistering pace. Hulme and Fittapaldi battled second place. Amon in the Matra, led by rookie manager Rilley, pressured the Brabham driver.

Peterson was untouchable and held the lead going into the second lap. Hulme held his ground against Fittapaldi’s onslaught. Stewart move up to fourth place. The Matra was fast, but fragile and bled away wear points.

Reutemann attempted to regain his position while Marlboro BRM’s driver Ganely began a move through the pack. Stewart, Reutemann, and Ganely were three wide down the back stretch followed closely by the Matra.

Peterson continued to lead the race going into the third lap ahead of Hulme. Fittapaldi began to falter and slip back. Stewart moved into third followed by Reutemann.

Peterson crossed the finish line ahead of Hulme to win the race! Stewart won a sprint against Reutemann down the front straight to take third.

Race Report – Speed Circuit Monaco 2022

Monaco Starting Grid 2022

Eight players showed for the race held on April using Steve K.’s spectacular Monaco map. Among the players was rookie manager John N. leading the Eiffeland team. All agreed to limit the number of drivers to one for each team.

Peterson sat on pole. For the first time this season, last year’s champion, Stewart, started in the first row. Hulme and Ganely occupied the second row followed by Fittpaldi and Stommelin. Reutemann and Galli were ready to go in the last row.

The Race Begins!

Peterson jumped into the lead followed by Stewart. Reutemann quickly moved his Brabham from 8th to 5th position.  Hulme challenged the leaders during the first lap.

The race heats up during lap 1.

Stewart held off Hulme while Peterson moved the March further ahead. The Brabham and the Malboro BRM battled for position with BRM holding 4th position through the tunnel. Stommelin positioned himself to threaten Reuteman heading into the tunnel.

Perterson had a commanding lead going into the 2nd lap. Hulme failed to pass Stewart and his McLaren began to falter.  Stommelin got by Ruetemann, but started to experience some engine trouble.

Peterson dominates in the March at Monaco during lap 2.

During the second lap, Peterson extended his lead with Stewart on his heals. Fittipaldi charged up to take the 4th position and threatened Hulme. Ganely lost momentum and began to loose positions. Stommelin’s Eiffeland trailed smoke and he also fell back.

The fight for fourth during the 2nd lap at Monaco.

Peterson maintained an incredible lead. Stewart gave his all to stay with Peterson, but could not pass him. Stommelin, Reutemann, and Hulme battled for 4th going three wide heading into the Gazometre. Reutemann made a daring move taking an inside line in the corner that resulted in him seizing 3rd position from Fittapaldi.

Field begins to spread out during the 3rd and final lap at Monaco.

Heading into the final lap, most of the cars were spent. Stommelin headed into the pits with a damaged engine that was on the verge of exploding. Peterson stretched his lead even further. Reutemann locked in 3rd place. Hulme passed Fittapaldi. Fittapaldi then struggled to keep 5th. Galli managed to pass Ganley through the Casino Corner.

March wins at Monaco 2022!

Stewart made one more charge, but it was not enough and Peterson took the checkered flagg to win the race. Brabham’s Reutermann finished in 3rd followed by McLaren’s Hulme. Race details follow:

Race Report – Speed Circuit Jarama 2022

Tabletop Racing Club’s first race at Jarama.

A great deal of speculation surrounds the abrupt departure of Steve K. from Ferrari. Did he have a falling-out with Enzo? Steve K. quickly signed with the fledgling Martini Techno team. Ferrari hired Dan to replace Steve K. as their team manager. The stage was set for Jarama’s inaugural race.

Denny Hulme seized pole position with high hopes of repeating last month’s McLaren victory. Ferrari’s Jacki Ickx started beside him in the front row. The season’s championship leaders, Fittapaldi and Peterson, occupied the front row. Last year’s champion, Stewart sat dead last in the blue #1 Elf.

Note: due to the number of teams, each team was limited to one driver.

During the first lap McLaren and Ferrari battled for the lead. Lotus tried to push forward, but was kept at bay. The Red #8 March followed close behind as Fittapaldi drove conservatively. Martini’s driver Galli stayed close behind the March and was followed by Schuppen in the white and red Marlboro BRM. Stewart lagged far behind.

Hulme was first to complete the initial lap and looked unbeatable, but the first lap was costly and he began to slow going into lap two. The the Ferrari pounced.

Meanwhile the two drivers who had started in the last row, Reutemann and Stewart had quietly moved up through the pack. Hulme slipped further back. The Ferrari completed the second lap just ahead of the STP March.

Travis’ strategy and patients paid off as the STP March car had more wear points going into the third lap than the leader. Martini Techno also began to push and move up during the last lap, but Galli ran into some bad luck when his car’s brakes failed going into the final corner.

Fittapaldi finished first and secured a sizable lead in the championship for himself and team STP March. Congratulations to Travis and a well run race. Ickx finished second followed by Reutemann marking Ferrari’s and Brabham’s first podium finishes of the season.

The final standings follow:

1st Travis (R. Peterson) 80/20/20/160/6 S
2nd Dan (J. Ickx) 80/60/20/140/5 * S

Race Report – Speed Circuit Kyalami 2022

The South African GP Challenge

A rules change occurred before the race began. Instead of using skill points to by back failed dice rolls, the 1 skill point could be used in lieu of a dice roll. As expected, this had an impact on racing strategy.

For the second year in a row 14 drivers occupied the grid at the South African GP. Team McLaren appeared with a new livery and reconfigured cars hoping to redeem themselves after a poor showing at Argentina. McLaren’s Denny Hulme claimed the pole and shared the front row with Brabham drivers Hill and Reutemann. Fitapaldi held 4th position in his JPS Lotus while the other series leader Peterson started in the row behind him. Who would break their 15 point tie?

Marlboro BRM hired Ray R. to lead their team and they were the only team not running strong down-force cars. But Marlboro garnered the 5th and 7th grid positions. The second row also included Ferrari driver Regazzoni in the 6th slot. Last season’s champion, Jacky Stewart was in 7th position.

As the cars roared away from the start-line line, Fittapaldi launch through the Brabhams and quickly passed Hulme. Fittapaldi was leading out of the Jukskei Sweep closely followed by Hulme. The two drivers repeated this pattern throughout laps 1 and 2.

Clubhouse Bend and The Esses proved to be a very challenging section of track for those behind the leaders. Many drivers found themselves having to emergency brake in order to avoid collisions. Fittapaldi and Hulme exited Leenkop Bend ahead the other drivers and established a large gap going down the front straightway.

Each group exiting the Leenkop Bend ahead of the other created a gap essentially stratifying the field into a leader segment, a middle segment, and an all others segment. This stratification proved difficult to overcome as it became reinforced with every run through Leenkop Bend. Drivers attempting to move up to the next group strained their vehicles to the limit.

Fitapaldi gained a bonus point for being first to complete the first lap followed by Hulme in his slipsteam. Then they raced side-by-side for most of the second lap. March driver Peterson had work his way through the pack and slowly began to reel in the leader group. Other drivers struggled to gain a footing. The teams burned through wear and skill points at a tremendous rate. Some began to experience brake and engine damage.

Then Regazzoni crashed hard in The Esses. He may be out for the next 5 races. Ferrari manager Steve said he is considering replacing Regazzoni with Mario Andretti.

Fittapaldi Stayed in the lead and then Regazzoni Crashed!

Once again Fittapaldi crossed the line first to start the final lap. Peterson was getting closer. Stewart dashed down the front straight, but it was not enough and his wear and skill points were soon spent. Brabham’s Hill began to fall back with a damaged engine. Peterson teammate, Lauda struggled with an ever failing brake system.

During the 3rd and final lap, the leaders raced side-by-side until Hulme passed Fittapaldi going into the Clubhouse Bend. Then Peterson beat Fittapaldi exiting the Leenkop Bend and threatened the leader. Hulme and Peterson pushed their engines pass the red-line as they charged down front strait heading for the finish line.

Peterson’s engine misfired and a thin line of smoke trailed behind his car. The McLaren held steady and Hulme was victorious for the second season in a row at Kyalami (under two different managers). Peterson finished a split second ahead of Fittapaldi. Stewart finished 4th followed by Revson.

Although he did not win the race, Peterson took a 1 point lead ahead of Fittapaldi in the drivers championship. Race details follow:
