Race Report: Speed Circuit Monza By Steve 2022

Rookie Team Makes it Big at Monza!

Eight teams filled out the grid for the Italian Grand Prix. Dave led Guthrie racing to its first pole position. Guthrie’s Beuttler shared the front row with this season’s champion, Peterson in the STP March. Brabham’s Reutermann and McLaren’s Hulme secured the second row.  

During the initial lap, Beuttler and Peterson raced side by side ahead of the pack. By the time group approached the Curve de Lesmos, Stewart had picked up several positions as he cut a path toward the leaders.

As they exited the Lesmos, Beuttler maintained his lead while Hulme and Stewart threatened Peterson’s position. But Peterson exploited the superior speed of his weak down force setup to outrun the others and secure the lead just before entering the Parabolica. The Brabham’s engine began to make a terrible noise, lose power, and Reutemann began to fall back.

Peterson, Beuttler, and Stewart were three wide through the Parabolica. Peterson exited the Parabolica in the lead followed by Stewart, Hulme, Beuttler, and Fittipaldi in a four wide formation! Peterson charged down the straight to secure the bonus point. Stewart slipped streamed Peterson and they were side-by-side to start the second lap. Reutemann continued to nurse his sick car.

Peterson began to struggle with the weak down-force setup. Stewart outmaneuvered Peterson through the Curva Grande and took the lead. Then Beuttler and Galli passed Peterson in the Lesmos.

Stewart and Beuttler battled for the lead through Valone and into the Parabolica. Peterson tried to regain momentum and passed Galli. Then Peterson flew out of the Parabolica, but this time Stewart crossed the line first to gain the bonus point. The Brabham may have lost a gear or two, but Reutermann was able hold it together for another lap.

Peterson took the lead going into the Curve Grande, but had lost the inside position going into the Parabolica. Beuttler and Galli were in hot pursuit of Stewart and Peterson. Stewart took the lead once again exiting the Lesmos. Beuttler and Galli passed Peterson as the March became more and more unstable in the corners. Stewart seemed in position to win.

A puff of smoke emanated from the rear of Stewart’s Tyrell as he exited the Valone and he slowed. Beuttler and Galli passed Stewart while Peterson vied for his position. Stewart out broke Galli and Peterson to regain some lost ground. The 4 leading drivers charged into the Parabolica. Peterson spun-out. Beuttler emerged in the lead followed by Galli and Stewart. Then the Tyrell’s engine exploded into a ball-of-fire and black smoke forcing Stewart to glide the car to a stop. Beuttler crossed the finish line first to win the race followed closely by Galli. Fittipaldi and Hulme had been battling and swapping positions throughout the race. Fittipaldi won the battle and finished in fourth place just ahead of Hulme.

Speed Circuit Season 12 House Rules Update

SPEED CIRCUIT 2022 Season 12 House Rules (17 Jul 2022)

Use normal speed circuit rules with the following variations.

Teams.

If six or less players attend a race, then each player should field 2 cars. If 7 or more players are present, then the players must agree whether 2 cars are allowed. A player may always choose to only field 1 car.

Skill Points.

Each team is assigned 2 skill points per lap.  For example at the beginning or a 3 lap race a team would be assigned 6 skill points.  Players use skill points instead of rolling a die.  Players decide before rolling dice whether or not to use a skill point. Points do not need to be pre-assigned to a specific team member.

Car Construction. 

When a player controls more than one driver he must assign 5 build points to one driver 4 to the other.

Down Force Settings (for winged cars).

Before assigning build points the player must choose the down force of each car and use the corresponding row on the Performance Chart.  The player must choose one of the following settings for each of their cars independently:

Note 1: Strong down force cars must have at least one wear point remaining in order to use the strong bonus in corners. For example, if a strong down force car with no remaining wear exceeds a corner’s speed by 20mph, then a chance table roll is required.

Note 2: If wear is not called for in the corning chart then a weak down force car does not need to pay 1 extra wear. For example, if a weak down force car exceeds a corner’s speed by 20mph then the player could either pay 2 wear (1 + 1) or roll on the chance table.

Grid Order.

There are 4 grid groups.  Cars in a lower numbered grid group will be placed on the starting ahead of cars in a higher numbered grid. 

Step 1: Place all cars in a grid group based on their starting speed:

Step 2: Starting with cars in group 4, players may spend 1 wear point to move a car into the next lower numbered grid group. A car may only move down one grid from its starting group.

Step 3: Starting with the lowest numbered grid group containing cars, place cars on grid starting positions. If there is more than one car in a group, then the players roll a die for each car. The car with the lowest adjusted roll result is placed on the grid first.  Tied cars will continue to roll off until the tie is broken.

Late Breaking. 

To avoid a collision or slow down for a corner, a player may choose to reduce his written speed before moving.  The speed reduction takes place in the space before the collision would occur or before a corner is entered.  Consult the Deceleration Chart and add 20 to the total amount the car is over its Max Deceleration.   If the player chooses not to slow down to avoid a collision, then use the normal collision rules.

Pass Through. 

When all lanes are blocked on a straightaway, instead of a collision a player may attempt to pass through one of the squares containing another vehicle.  The passing player may spend 1 wear or roll on the Pass Through Table. 

The player being passed through may allow or attempt to block the pass through.  If the player attempts to block, then the passing player may call off the passing attempt or continue.  If the passer continues, then both players must roll on the Pass Through Table and add 1 to their die roll.

Corner Acceleration.

Players may accelerate a car starting on the last space of a corner (the last space with a speed limit).  Cars starting in a corner, but not in the last space of a corner, may not accelerate. Cars that spin in a corner may accelerate using start speed on their next turn, even if they are not on the last space of the corner.  Cars starting in the last space of a corner are not impacted by the space’s speed limit.

Long Tracks

If 1 lap of a track is equal to or exceeds the length of an average 3-lap race and one lap is planned, then calculate Wear and Skill points as if the race was 3-laps. This rule applies to tracks like Steve’s realistically long Nurbergring.

Scoring

During a race, the first car to complete the 1st lap receives a bonus point. The first car to complete the 2nd lap also scores a bonus point. All cars that complete a race score points. Cars that do not finish the race do not score points (unless they earned bonus points for leading laps 1 or 2). If 12 or fewer cars start a race use the following formula to determine finishing points: 1st = Number of Cars +3; 2nd = Number of Cars +1; 3rd the Number of Cars -2; 4th = Number of Cars -3; 5th = the number of cars -4; etc. Continue this pattern. If more than 12 cars start a race, then use 12 for the Number of Cars in the above formula.  Cars finishing beyond 12th place receive 1 point.

Race Report – Speed Circuit Rheims 2022

March Dominates French Grand Prix!

Another full house of eight players resulted in each team fielding a single car. As predicted, the race was fast and furious.

Hulme started on pole for McLaren and he shared the front row with March’s Peterson, the season points leader. The only two drivers who had won races this season controlled on the front row. But Brabham driver Reutemann who had started in the back during the last few raced and finished near the front started in the 3rd position and promised to be a contender. Fittapaldi started in the second row and was hoping to make a comback and was in a good position to do so. Meanwhile Stewart, last year’s champion started dead last in his less than stellar performing Elf.

During the first lap, Peterson set a blistering pace. Hulme and Fittapaldi battled second place. Amon in the Matra, led by rookie manager Rilley, pressured the Brabham driver.

Peterson was untouchable and held the lead going into the second lap. Hulme held his ground against Fittapaldi’s onslaught. Stewart move up to fourth place. The Matra was fast, but fragile and bled away wear points.

Reutemann attempted to regain his position while Marlboro BRM’s driver Ganely began a move through the pack. Stewart, Reutemann, and Ganely were three wide down the back stretch followed closely by the Matra.

Peterson continued to lead the race going into the third lap ahead of Hulme. Fittapaldi began to falter and slip back. Stewart moved into third followed by Reutemann.

Peterson crossed the finish line ahead of Hulme to win the race! Stewart won a sprint against Reutemann down the front straight to take third.

Race Report – Speed Circuit Monaco 2022

Monaco Starting Grid 2022

Eight players showed for the race held on April using Steve K.’s spectacular Monaco map. Among the players was rookie manager John N. leading the Eiffeland team. All agreed to limit the number of drivers to one for each team.

Peterson sat on pole. For the first time this season, last year’s champion, Stewart, started in the first row. Hulme and Ganely occupied the second row followed by Fittpaldi and Stommelin. Reutemann and Galli were ready to go in the last row.

The Race Begins!

Peterson jumped into the lead followed by Stewart. Reutemann quickly moved his Brabham from 8th to 5th position.  Hulme challenged the leaders during the first lap.

Stewart held off Hulme while Peterson moved the March further ahead. The Brabham and the Malboro BRM battled for position with BRM holding 4th position through the tunnel. Stommelin positioned himself to threaten Reuteman heading into the tunnel.

Perterson had a commanding lead going into the 2nd lap. Hulme failed to pass Stewart and his McLaren began to falter.  Stommelin got by Ruetemann, but started to experience some engine trouble.

During the second lap, Peterson extended his lead with Stewart on his heals. Fittipaldi charged up to take the 4th position and threatened Hulme. Ganely lost momentum and began to loose positions. Stommelin’s Eiffeland trailed smoke and he also fell back.

Peterson maintained an incredible lead. Stewart gave his all to stay with Peterson, but could not pass him. Stommelin, Reutemann, and Hulme battled for 4th going three wide heading into the Gazometre. Reutemann made a daring move taking an inside line in the corner that resulted in him seizing 3rd position from Fittapaldi.

Heading into the final lap, most of the cars were spent. Stommelin headed into the pits with a damaged engine that was on the verge of exploding. Peterson stretched his lead even further. Reutemann locked in 3rd place. Hulme passed Fittapaldi. Fittapaldi then struggled to keep 5th. Galli managed to pass Ganley through the Casino Corner.

Stewart made one more charge, but it was not enough and Peterson took the checkered flagg to win the race. Brabham’s Reutermann finished in 3rd followed by McLaren’s Hulme. Race details follow:

Race Report – Speed Circuit Buenos Aires 2022

Thrilling Season Opener!

During the 2022 season we will be racing with the teams that participated in the 1972 formula season. Steve returns to manage the 2021 constructor’s championship team, Ferrari. Den once again leads Elf Tyrell, Terry spearheads MRD Brabham, and John steers the helm of JP Lotus. Travis moves to STP March. Yardly McLaren filled the void left by Travis by hiring Ray G.

The season opener took place in Argentina at the Buenos Aires circuit. Steve built the track board and it is the first time the club raced on the circuit. The narrow fast circuit proved to be a challenge to both drivers and vehicles.

Lotus driver Fittipaldi took pole position on the 12 driver starting grid. Elf’s Stewart, last years champion started in 10th. Ferrari drivers also started near the back of the pack. McLaren was the only team not using a strong down force setup and Hulme started in the front row next to Fittipaldi.

During the first lap Fittipaldi stayed in the lead and positioned himself coming out of the Cajon turn to pull far ahead of the pack. Stewart and Peterson began moving up while Luada moved into 3rd place.

Fittipaldi continue to beat the pack out of the corners and built a commanding lead going into lap 2. Hulme faltered as his car chewed through wear points. Ickx remained in 3rd while Lauda moved up to 2nd.

Fittipaldi dominated the second lap. The remaining positions were highly contested.

Once again Fittapaldi was first to cross the finish line to begin the last lap earning his second bonus point in the race, but his wear points were running low. Soon, Stewart and Peterson made a run against the slowing leader.

Stewart backed off, but Peterson pressed forward catching Fittipaldi and passing him in the last corner garnering victory!

Race Report – Triplanetary Space Race December 2021

Humanitarian Aid Garners Good Karma For the Winner!

Four ships blasted off from Terra to start the race.

John, Steve, and Den set course toward Mercury. They planned to complete the round trip course via Mercury, Venus, Mars and back to Terra. Terry was the only pilot to plot a course to Mars with hopes of taking the Mars, Venus, Mercury, and then Terra route.

John Dropped medical supplies at Mercury and gained bonus racing points. John, Steve, and Den pushed their ships while trying to out maneuver one another. While on the long run to Mars, Terry handled his ship conservatively.

Terry placed supplies for miners in orbit around Mars. Unfortunately the explosives included in the supplies were live. Because of the hazard he created, Terry did not receive bonus points. Fortunately, John, Steve, and Den were able to avoid the “explosives” that look suspiciously like a mine orbiting Mars.

John lead most of the race. He ran an almost perfect race including a successful humanitarian drop. As a result he won!
